Our Story — Pesona Jiwa (Charm of the Soul)
Pesona Jiwa means “Charm of the Soul.”
It is a name that reflects something we believe deeply:
That beneath stress, burnout, trauma, addiction, anxiety, and emotional pain, there remains an essential part of every person that has never been broken.
Sometimes it becomes hidden.
Sometimes it becomes buried beneath years of responsibility, survival, loss, pressure, or self-protection.
But it is still there.
The purpose of Pesona Jiwa is to help people reconnect with that part of themselves.

How Pesona Jiwa Began
Pesona Jiwa was not created as a retreat business.
It was created as a response to something that was missing.
Over many years working in counselling, psychotherapy, addiction treatment, and mental health recovery, I repeatedly met people who had reached a point where traditional approaches were no longer enough.
Many had attended therapy.
Some had been through treatment programmes.
Others had read countless books, listened to podcasts, and invested years in personal development.
Yet they continued feeling stuck.
Not because they lacked insight.
Not because they lacked motivation.
But because their nervous system remained organised around stress, trauma, burnout, anxiety, addiction, or survival.
They understood their problems intellectually.
Their body had not yet caught up.
At the same time, I noticed another challenge.
Many retreat and treatment environments were built around groups.
For some people, groups can be incredibly beneficial.
For others, particularly those carrying trauma, burnout, public visibility, professional responsibility, or a strong need for privacy, group settings often created additional pressure rather than relief.
Some felt they had to perform.
Some struggled to be fully open.
Some simply needed something more personalised.
That observation became the foundation for Pesona Jiwa.
A Different Model of Recovery
Rather than creating another group retreat, we chose a different path.
One guest.
One villa.
One family.
No groups.
No shared programmes.
No competing needs.
No requirement to fit into someone else’s process.
Everything is built around a single person and their unique circumstances.
This allows us to provide a level of individual attention, flexibility, privacy, and clinical depth that is difficult to achieve within larger retreat settings.
For many guests, this is the first time in years they have experienced an environment where they are not expected to perform, manage others, or carry responsibility.
Instead, they are given space to simply be.
And often, that alone becomes profoundly healing.
The Meeting of Clinical Excellence and Human Connection
From the beginning, I wanted Pesona Jiwa to combine two things that are rarely found together.
Clinical excellence.
And genuine human warmth.
Recovery requires expertise.
Trauma requires expertise.
Addiction requires expertise.
Burnout and nervous system dysregulation require expertise.
But expertise alone is not enough.
People heal through relationship.
Through feeling safe.
Through feeling understood.
Through experiencing genuine connection.
This is why Pesona Jiwa operates as a family environment rather than a clinical institution.
Guests are welcomed into a space where professional standards remain high, but where human connection is never sacrificed in favour of process.
A Nervous System-Informed Approach
Over time, my work increasingly focused on understanding the role of the nervous system in mental health and recovery.
Again and again, I saw people struggling with symptoms that made perfect sense when viewed through this lens.
Anxiety.
Burnout.
Emotional numbness.
Addiction.
Chronic stress.
Difficulty switching off.
Functional freeze.
Many of these experiences were not signs of weakness.
They were signs of adaptation.
A nervous system doing its best to protect the individual based on what it had learned.
This led me to deepen my training in trauma-informed practice, Polyvagal Theory, attachment, addiction treatment, and nervous system regulation.
Today, these principles underpin every programme we offer.
We do not simply ask:
“What is wrong?”
We ask:
“What has your nervous system adapted to?”
That question often changes everything.
Why Bali?
People often ask why Pesona Jiwa is based in Bali.
The answer goes beyond scenery.
Bali offers something increasingly rare.
Space.
Slower rhythms.
Connection with nature.
A culture that values community, spirituality, and balance.
For many guests arriving from fast-paced professional lives, the environment itself begins creating conditions that support recovery.
Not because location alone heals.
But because healing often becomes more accessible when the nervous system is no longer exposed to constant demands and stimulation.
The setting supports the work.
It does not replace it.
The Introduction of taVNS
As the science of nervous system regulation continues to evolve, we remain committed to integrating evidence-informed innovations where appropriate.
One of these developments is transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS).
As interest in vagus nerve stimulation has grown, I have become increasingly interested in its potential to support nervous system regulation alongside psychotherapy and recovery work.
While taVNS is not a cure and is not appropriate for everyone, many guests report feeling calmer, more grounded, and better able to engage in therapeutic work when it is incorporated into a broader treatment plan.
For us, the goal is never to chase trends.
The goal is to thoughtfully integrate approaches that may support meaningful recovery.
More Than a Retreat
Although people often describe Pesona Jiwa as a retreat, the word has never felt entirely accurate.
A retreat implies stepping away from life.
Our goal is different.
The aim is to help you reconnect with life.
To restore capacity.
To rebuild resilience.
To address the patterns that have kept you stuck.
To create meaningful and sustainable change.
Whether someone arrives struggling with trauma, burnout, addiction, anxiety, emotional exhaustion, or a deep sense of disconnection, our intention remains the same:
To provide the safety, support, expertise, and human connection required for genuine recovery.
Looking Forward
Pesona Jiwa continues to evolve.
New research emerges.
Our understanding of trauma, addiction, and nervous system regulation continues to deepen.
Yet the core philosophy remains unchanged.
People do not heal because they are fixed.
People heal because they experience enough safety, support, understanding, and connection to rediscover parts of themselves that stress, trauma, burnout, and survival once obscured.
That belief sits at the heart of everything we do.
And it always will.
